Outdoor Christmas Light Ideas for Your Front Garden

Gold light-up reindeer family in a snowy front garden

The front of your home is the first thing neighbours and visitors see, and a few well-placed lights can make it feel magical on dark December evenings. Here are our favourite ideas, from subtle to showstopping.

1. Frame the front door

Your front door is the natural focal point. A pre-lit Christmas wreath adds instant warmth with no extra wiring. For a real wow factor, a snow-frosted doorway arch turns the whole entrance into a festive feature.

2. Add a light-up reindeer display

Light-up reindeer are a classic for good reason: they look elegant, they glow beautifully after dark and they work on a lawn, a patio or beside the front step. Choose warm white for a timeless look, like our gold reindeer family, or go for silver sparkle with the silver reindeer and sleigh.

3. Line the path

Guide visitors to the door with a row of small lanterns or low lights along the path. It's practical in the dark and looks lovely from the street.

4. Dress the porch

Flank your door with a pair of slim trees or topiaries and wind warm white lights through them. Mini 2ft Christmas trees are the perfect size for either side of a doorstep.

5. Stick to one colour of light

Mixing warm white, cool white and coloured lights can look busy. Choose one tone and use it everywhere for a calm, pulled-together look.

Safety tips for outdoor lights

  • Check each product is rated for outdoor use, and follow the instructions for covered or sheltered placement.
  • Use an outdoor-rated extension lead and keep plugs and connections off the ground and out of the rain.
  • Put your lights on a timer so they're on in the evening and off overnight.
  • Secure larger displays with pegs so they stay put on windy nights.
